THE VIA FRANCIGENA is one of the most interesting journeys in Europe. This journey takes you along one of the most historic and longest pilgrimage paths. The Way begins in Canterbury and makes its way to Dover. A ferry takes the traveller to Calais, where the land journey resumes. Across France to Switzerland. Then down to Lake Leman and along the Rhone Valley, up to the Alps and down to Aosta in Italy. Along the Italian peninsula, before arriving in Rome.

The Via Francigena is an ancient pilgrim path through the heart of Europe. The Christian origins of this ancient route date back to the seventh century. The Latin name Via Francigena (the Frankish Route) was given to the route first documented by Sigeric the Serious, Archbishop of Canterbury who returned from Rome to Canterbury along the route in 994AD describing the main stopovers in his journal.

Accommodation

We tried to pre-book as much accommodation as possible due to the time of year (August-September) we traveled. Most of it was found on the internet via Google. The A.I.V.F provides members with lists of various accommodations including monasteries, B&Bs and hotels along the route..

When to Go

The thing about travel is that any time is the right time. It’s just that you will have different experiences. We began our walk in August, which is too hot for walking in Italy. The BEST TIME is from September to November or March to May. Be aware that Easter sometimes falls in March or April and accommodation may be more difficult to obtain.
